Professional Level Workshops and Coaching

Further Than The Edge Productions wants to support actors and performers as professionals at any stage of their creative development.

There are two ways you can benefit – either taking 1 to 1 Actor Coaching or attending group Workshops – Theatre Workshop 1.

Both approaches are designed as a safe space for you to be able to push yourself artistically and technically, so you’re better equipped in your craft to deliver in a creative industry environment.

1 to 1 Coaching and Workshops will be delivered by Rowenna Mortimer.

Theatre Workshop 1

Upcoming dates to be announced soon

Workshops will be led by Rowenna Mortimer, with guest facilitators and practitioners from time to time as appropriate.

These workshops are predominantly aimed at actors, but they’re also good for performers from other disciplines – performance artists, dancers, improvisers, performance poets, stand-ups, comics, public-speakers – who want to benefit from what an acting focussed workshop has to offer.

You may be just starting out, just graduated, a seasoned actor, or you’ve had a break and want to ease yourself back in – the main requirement is that you work with the commitment and attitude of a professional.

What does this mean? Learn any script extract, if required, in advance of the workshop, turn up on time ie. early – space will be made available 30 minutes before the start of the workshop – warm yourself up, and be present and ready to go.

The focus is on working as a live performer (these are not screen-acting workshops), using space, voice and body to make scenes work and create another world with credibility, taking ideas out of the head and into the space.

Workshops will either look at a different aspect of the acting discipline, a script extract/scene-study, or trouble-shoot specific issues brought to the workshop.

The aim is to support you to develop your practical actor toolkit, so you have the self-awareness and confidence to measure your success as an actor, based not on the media profile of the work you do, but on how you manage and deliver your craft.

Observers

Are you a visual artist or writer? We can sometimes give space in workshops for you to develop your practice by observing the actors’ working process. Get in touch if you’re interested.

1 to 1 Actor Coaching

Sessions will look at getting the best out of you as an individual actor, working on the area or issue you wish to look at, so you come out with tangible options, a clearer direction and more confidence to deliver.

The focus of the session is down to you – it may be text work, audition preparation, voice/movement work, or trouble-shooting a specific issue. Here’s just some of the areas and techniques we can work with:

  • Audition monologues – classical and contemporary
  • Solo shows – directorial support
  • Sight reading
  • Getting off book/line-learning
  • Breaking down the text and script analysis
  • Approaches to characterisation/interpretation
  • Stanislavsky
  • Actioning
  • Laban
  • Improvisation/devising – how to use it, getting the most out of it
  • Using the voice – sound and silence
  • Using the body – stillness, shape, movement
  • Using the space
  • Emotional credibility
  • Focus and attention
  • Purpose/objectives
  • Control and spontaneity
  • Response, reaction, timing

Get in touch to discuss any area of your acting journey you’d like to work on and what’s best for you.

Rowenna Mortimer…

…trained at Central School of Speech and Drama in acting, directing and design, and at the Conservatoire Municipal in France. Along with her time spent with the Teatro Experimental de Cali, Colombia on collective creation and improvisation approaches, and her later studies in Laban methods, this eclectic background gives her a uniquely comprehensive approach to understanding what makes acting happen.

She can motivate and direct you in your craft as an actor. This means helping you develop as your own creative tool and obtain the confidence needed to apply your skills as and when required, so you can sustain and steer your own acting journey over the longer term.

As well as her work as a writer, director and producer, Rowenna has been Acting Coach for the past 10 years at WMCollege, and a drama practitioner in many wider community contexts and forums. All this gives her the unique ability to hone in on an individual’s strengths and get the best out of them. She’s a specialist in making you feel comfortable, so you can take risks and push your boundaries, tapping into and teasing out your own distinctive performance.
